What’s an easy Father’s Day gift that I can do?

Holidays always tend to sneak up on me as a teacher and Father’s Day is no different. If you teach summer school or your school year extends into June, you know the feeling. Due to the limited supplies at this point in the year, I’ve come up with a super easy craft that can be done with things you probably already have in the classroom! Huzzah!

Fathers Day Gift: Dandelion Card

Supplies:

  • Construction paper or cardstock with template (one per student… plus a few extra for those inevitable oopsies) - I like having Astrobrights Neon Cardstock on hand for moments like this.

  • Q-tips (one per student or enough for a station) No Q-tips? Pencil erasers work great too! Or really anything round!

  • White paint (I guarantee someone will have this in your building if you don’t. You don’t need much so hit up the art teacher if you need!)

  • Green and brown crayons

  • Optional: class set of “I Think You’re Dandy Because…” white templates

Basic Steps:

  1. Have students draw green stem and leaves and add the brown seed center

*Do this part in crayon instead of paint or marker so that it doesn’t mix weirdly with the white paint

  2. Students use q-tips to “dot” white paint to make the fuzzy part of the seed

*Make this a station in the back of the room to limit the spread of paint around the room.

  3. Have students write a message on the inside

*Make a list of some ideas on the board to help with stuck writers and reluctant spellers.

Optional Picture Addition:

  1. Have students complete the “I Think You’re Dandy Because…” prompt on the white paper.

*Have students use marker so it shows up clearly in the picture.

*They can also add illustrations or doodles to make it even cuter but must still be able to read the words

  2. Take a picture of the student holding the page OR a picture of them holding a dandelion because that’s super cute, too.

*Do this outside, in the hallway, or facing a window to get the best lighting

  3. Print and glue into the middle of the card.

*If you need it the same day: size to half of a landscape page and print on regular copy (still cute in black and white).

*If you want fancier and have time, print at Walgreens or Walmart

  4. Send home the “I Think You’re Dandy Because…” page along with the card.
